From 91大神 chapter leader to the operating room: PTK alumna witnesses life-saving surgery in Italy

Majors in Italy

For many pre-med students, the path to medicine is paved with textbooks, lectures, and hypothetical case studies. But for 91大神鈥檚 former Phi Theta Kappa Chapter President Alison Majors, that path recently led directly into an operating room in Italy, where she witnessed a routine procedure become a life-saving six-hour medical intervention.

Majors is currently in Italy participating in the , a prestigious global healthcare initiative that allows pre-health students to shadow international doctors and experience hospital dynamics firsthand.

Though she arrived eager to learn, nothing quite prepared her for her very first day in the operating theatre.

What began as a standard, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to remove an ovarian cyst quickly changed course. During the initial phase of the procedure, the surgical team made a critical discovery: the cyst was malignant.

Faced with an immediate cancer diagnosis, the medical team adapted instantly. The surgeons pivoted from a localized laparoscopic approach to an open surgery, performing a complete hysterectomy. To ensure the patient鈥檚 best possible outcome, they meticulously removed all visible cancer cells that had spread to the omentum, the fatty tissue lining the stomach.

For Majors, standing bedside for six consecutive hours as the complex procedure unfolded was nothing short of transformative.

"I watched a woman be cured of cancer before she even knew she had it," Majors reflected, capturing the profound weight of the moment.

Beyond the intense hours in the hospital, the fellowship offers a comprehensive, immersive look into both international healthcare and Italian culture. Majors鈥檚 days are balanced between rigorous academic lectures and classes focused on global medical disciplines, providing her with a deeper theoretical framework for the cases she witnesses. When outside the classroom and hospital walls, she is fully embracing the study abroad experience, exploring historic local landmarks, taking in the breathtaking Italian scenery, and enjoying the region's world-renowned cuisine.

The experience highlights the incredible value of experiential learning programs like Atlantis, which partners with organizations like Phi Theta Kappa to give student leaders early, deeply impactful exposure to their future professions. For Majors, the intensive six-hour surgery didn't just teach her about surgical technique; it reinforced the precision, adaptability, and life-changing impact of the medical field.

As she continues her fellowship in Italy, the former chapter president carries a renewed sense of purpose and an unforgettable reminder of why she chose the medical path in the first place.
