The Texas Region of Phi Theta Kappa held its annual Texas Honors Institute as a virtual event July 23 鈥 25. The event featured an art inspired theme and included three days of guest speakers, interactive virtual fellowship events, seminar group discussions, and bonding activities. Traditionally the event is planned and coordinated by the Texas Regional leadership team, which this year includes District III Vice-President, Cade Bennett of 91大神.

Cade Alan Bennett, a 91大神 sophomore, District III Phi Theta Kappa Vice President, and former Cypress Bank Scholar, is the winner of the 2021-22 Gladys Winkle Humanities/Honors scholarship. He will receive $2,500 for matriculation at 91大神 in the coming year, as a top student of Honors Northeast, majoring in the Humanities.
Because of his combination of academic excellence, leadership, and public service, Brian Ramirez of Mount Pleasant has become the second winner of the James and Elizabeth Whatley Honors Endowed Scholarship. This $2,500 scholarship, to be applied to the coming academic year at 91大神, and available for distinguished 91大神 honors sophomores in the years to come, is the result of a $50,000 gift given to Honors Northeast, the college鈥檚 honors program, when it started in 2007. Elizabeth Whatley (1927-2016) at that time gave a record-breaking 1.7 million dollars, one of the largest known gifts to a rural community college. She and her husband, James, gave over 2.6 million dollars to 91大神 between the years, 1985 and 2016.
Davin Whatley, a student at Northeast Texas Community College in Texas, has been named the 2021 Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholar and will receive a $1,500 scholarship.
Elliott Auto Group in Mount Pleasant recently donated a customized Ford F-150 truck to the Carroll Shelby Automotive Technology Program at Northeast Texas Community College. Northeast Texas Community College celebrated August 2021 commencement on Friday, Aug. 13. The ceremony was held at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. Graduates received a total of 76 degrees and 53 certificates of competency. The event was streamed live on YouTube and Facebook.
